How dare he?!

1 Samuel 17: 45-47 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

Some hard seasons go on a lot longer than we expect, want or hope. Discouragement can set in. I remember a season like this in my life and I was talking to my sister – no I was whinging to my sister – telling her how down I was feeling and blaming God for the whole situation. I remember her reaction, it shocked me. The words cut me right to the bone, grabbed my heart and gave me shock treatment back into the land of the living. She said, “How dare He!” I said “What?!” I didn’t realise she would jump on my pity party against God with such strength. She said, “How dare the enemy do that!” And then she prayed such a powerful prayer that I was ashamed at where I had found myself: intimidated, blaming God and overwhelmed by the enemy. Her prayer and strength reminded me of David’s statement in 1 Samuel 17:26 before he faced off with Goliath.

1 Samuel 17: 26 Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?

I love David’s disdain for Goliath and the Philistines. He knew the enemy and it certainly was not God. He was strong in his conviction: how dare they come against God! We have to get this same passion and the same attitude with our own lives, families, and churches. How dare you, you have no authority and no right! David didn’t even have the victory of Jesus to stand on – how much more confident should we be!

Then David continues as he comes face to face with Goliath, his knowledge of the bigness and grandeur of his God gave him the confidence to stand before this 3-meter-tall giant. And not only stand before him, but ‘trash talk’ him before running and killing him. David’s confidence was in God and he knew that the enemy had no right standing against God Almighty and His people. That’s you!

Today, get your confidence back in your God, don’t allow the confidence and ‘trash talk’ of the enemy to overcome you anymore. Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that comes against the daughter or son of the living God?! How dare you! It’s time to stand up and face Goliath with the confidence, strength, and wisdom of God surging through your bones! It’s time to stand up and win this war!
